Meaning of Resume or Curriculum Vitae

The major dissimilarities between a resume and curriculum vitae (CV) are length, what is included, and what each is used for. A resume is a review of one’s recognition, qualifications, and future career path. It is a proper arrangement of one’s personal record. In other words, resume can be defined as a written declaration that includes a person’s personal data, education, and employment background etc. It is also known as ‘Bio-Data’, ‘curriculum vitae’, ‘qualifications document’, or ‘qualification brief’. It acts as an advertisement of a person’s qualifications and inspires the possible employers to call the person to the interview.

Resume used when applying for a position in industry, non-profit, and public sector. Curriculum Vitae used when applying for positions in academia, fellowships, and grants

  • Murphy & Hildebrandt defined, “Curriculum Vitae are a document labeling one’s, qualifications and career path”.
  • In the opinion of Bovee, Thill, & Schatznan, “A resume is a structured, written summary of a person’s educations, employment background and job qualification.”
  • According to Kitty O. Locker, “A resume is a persuasive summary of one’s qualifications for employment.”

Thus, it is comprehensible that resume is a accurate declaration that describes a person’s personal, educational and employment information. A job candidate prepares resume and submits it along with his application for Job. A customary resume usually includes name & address, education background; work experience; achievements and awards; personal data like nationality, gender, religion, age, hobby etc.; and reference.
