Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC

If the mixture of ethyne & dry HCl is passed through mercuric chloride (HgCl4) at 150°-200°C, vinyl chloride or chloroethene is produced by the addition reaction. PVC is a thermoplastic material. PVC is a thermoplastic made of 57% chlorine and 43% carbon.

PVC is produced by heating of chloroethene at higher pressure in presence of organic peroxide e.g. tertiary butyl peroxide.
