The Fight for the Future of DNS is White Hot

Since its inception, one of the toughest challenges NS1 has faced is the general fact that DNS is a mature market segment with reputable and well-established stakeholders. When Chris Beavers and his two co-founders started the company, literally every company and internet user already had some form of DNS technology. This is a decades old technology. Beavers and everyone associated with the company are interested in mentioning at the time and bar that NS1 is not a DNS vendor, but rather a suite of products offering application and traffic delivery, performance and reliability.

In the early days NS1 had to constantly spread that message and teach its potential customers how its offer provided something different than those that came with many years of performance history over the years. In the first two parts of EC-1 we look at the source of the company and its core product offerings in DNS and DDI. In this segment, it’s time to take a look at the broader market and NS1’s face-to-face competition and what it has set the precedent for the company’s future.

Hosting providers typically provide basic DNS services that “only work” out of the box, creating a huge challenge for any vendor in the managed DNS space.

Eric Hanselman, chief research analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said there is an expectation among some organizations that DNSE is a part of what happens on the Internet. Hanselman said, “I think the biggest misconception I’ve gotten about DNS is how critical it is to the effectiveness and customer experience of everything that companies do today related to technology.”

Since its inception, one of the most difficult challenges for NS1 has been the simple undeniable fact that DNS is a mature market class with respectable and well-established stakeholders. When Chris Beavers and his two co-founders started the firm, pretty much every firm and web client already had some sort of DNS space. Despite all this, it is decades old knowledge. Beavers and everyone involved with the firm are interested in the repeated equation that NS1 is not a DNS vendor, but rather a set of businesses that provide software and site visitors with delivery, efficiency and reliability.
