According to Sensor Tower, the popular instant messaging software Telegram has reached the rare club of apps that have been downloaded over 1 billion times globally.
The app, which was established in late 2013 and is based in Dubai, reached the milestone on Friday, according to the mobile analytics agency. Telegram’s largest market, like that of its main competitor, WhatsApp, is India. According to Sensor Tower, the world’s second-largest internet market accounts for roughly 22% of lifetime install.
“[India] is followed by Russia and Indonesia, which account for around 10% and 8% of [all installs] respectively. “In 2021, the app’s installs surged, hitting around 214.7 million in the first half of 2021, up 61 percent year over year from 133 million in H1 2020,” it continued.
It’s important to note that the number of installs does not equal the number of active users. As of early this year, Telegram had almost 500 million monthly active users. However, the increase in downloads, which corresponds with WhatsApp’s poor management of informing its vast userbase about its privacy policies, implies that Telegram has gotten some extra attention recently.
Telegram, over $1 billion earlier this year, is the fifteenth app in the world to have been downloaded 1 billion times or more, according to Sensor Tower. According to Sensor Tower, other apps on the list include WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Spotify, and Netflix. (Most Google apps that come pre-installed on Android smartphones are not tracked by mobile research businesses.) A request for comment from Telegram was not immediately returned.
