Bedrock is the solid rock lying beneath the soil and weathered material. It is the solid rock underlying unconsolidated surface materials (such as soil). It is the lithified rock that lies under a loose softer material called regolith at the surface of the Earth or other terrestrial planets. It might also experience subsurface weathering at its higher state line, forming saprolite.

It is made up of igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic rock, and it often serves as the parent material (the source of rock and granite fragments) for regolith and soil. A bedrock deposit that happens at Earth’s exterior is called an outcrop. Although some deposits might be tough adequate to oppose the route of glaciers and ice sheets over their exposed surfaces, others might be scratched or intensely striated. Erosion may also form the bedrock of some mountains that serve as the source of glaciers into semicircular basins called cirques.
