GM is adding an electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck to its lineup, to deliver more than 1 million electric vehicles worldwide by 2025. GM President Mark Reus said Tuesday that the Chevrolet Silverado electronic full-size pickup will base on the automaker’s Ultium battery platform and will have a range of approximately 400 miles for a full charge. It should note that this is not an official EPA figure predicting GM.

The electronic Silverado will carry Ford’s incoming electronic F-150. The new EV entrant is not following the Rivian commercial market, but its electronic R1 pickup will also compete in the space. The news also follows a number of announcements over the past 18 months, including the launch of BrightDrop, a new business unit to offer commercial customers, starting with GM’s Ultimate battery platform and ecosystem of electronic and connected products, FedEx.
BrightDrop will start with two main products: an electric van called EV600 with an estimated range of 250 miles in length and a pod-like electric pallet dubbed EP1. Last year, GM pledged more than $27 billion to develop EVs and AV products, including $7 billion by 2021, and plans to launch 30 EVs worldwide by 2025, with more than two-thirds available in North America. Reus said the company would build the Silverado electric pickup truck at the company is Zero assembly plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan. In October 2020, GM renamed its Detroit- Hamtramck assembly plant “Factory Zero” and later said it would invest $2.2 billion in the factory to produce a variety of electric trucks and SUVs. The facilities, which are undergoing a complete overhaul and reconstruction and have expanded to more than 4.5 million square feet, will produce the GMC Hummer EV pickup and Cruise Origin, a purpose-built, all-electric and shared self-driving vehicle. Production of the GMC Hummer EV pickup will begin later this year.
