Phloem Formation and Function in Plants

Phloem Formation and Function in Plants

Phloem: Phloem transports food from the leaves to the rest of the plant. This is the movement of food substances from the stems to growing tissues and storage tissues.

Formation:

  • It is situated just beneath the bundle sheath
  • It is composed of sieve tubes, companion cells and phloem parenchyma
  • It consists of columns of living cells.

Phloem is made up of phloem fibres, phloem parenchyma, sieve cells and their accompanying companion cells.

Function: It conducts the prepared food. Another function is transportation of food and nutrients such as sugar and amino acids from leaves to storage organs and growing parts of plant. This movement of substances is called translocation. They also forms vascular bundles with xylem
