A cell may be defined by the following ways:
(1) A cell is the structural and functional unit of life
(2) The self-reproducing, structural and functional unit matter of protoplasm which is surrounded by a living membrane is known as a cell.

Types of Cells
On the basis of the presence or absence of the distinct nucleus, the cell is of two types.
(i) Prokaryotic Cell and
(ii) Eukaryotic Cell

On the basis of physiological activities and the process of division, the cell can be divided into two types, such as-
(i)Somatic cell and
ii) Reproductive cell or gamete.
