Production of Sound Wave

The principal source of the origin of sound is the vibration of the body. As long as the vibration of a body exists emission of sound continues up to that. This sound produces sensation of hearing to our ears by travelling through continuous elastic medium. For example:

When a tuning fork is struck it will vibrate and will produce sound. If the tuning fork is touched by hand the vibration will stop. Consequently sound emission will also be stopped. In the figure, while emitting sounds by a tuning fork a pithball in touch with one arm of the tuning fork repeatedly moves away from the arm due to the vibration of the fork (Figure).

From our daily experience we can understand the origin and nature of sound. For example, if a metal object tails on the floor or a metal object is struck by a hammer sound is produced; but if it is held by hand or by a hard object, and then sound stops. Sound is produced by blowing a flute or by plucking the string of a musical instrument or by vibrating the membrane of a drum. So, it is understood that sound is produced from vibration. This vibration produces waves in the medium that oscillates the membrane of our ears and hence we can hear sound.

Conclusion: Sound is produced due to the vibration of a body. Main source of the origin of all sorts of sound is the vibration of the body. As a result of vibration sound is produced from mechanical energy.
