July 16, Roadrunner: A film about Anthony Bordine opens in US theaters. Like many documentaries, the film tries to tell the story of their subject in their own words, slicing archive footage, including interviews and show outtakes.
It also includes the words that Bordeaux never spoke to the camera before his death before committing suicide in 2018 and yet you get to hear his voice. In an interview with The New Yorker, the film’s director, Morgan Neville, said he had three statements that he wanted to describe to Bardain where there were no recordings, and so he recreated them with software instead. “I created an AI model of his voice,” he told the magazine.
This was probably no easy feat. In a separate interview with GQ, Neville said he had contacted four different agencies about the project before deciding on the best. The company supplied about a dozen hours of audio to an AI model.
Neville wanted a copy of the software, which involved a lot of work in determining the exact tone of Bordine’s voice, since he had been on TV for many years as a writer and travel host had changed the way he described his writing. “If you look at the picture except for the line you mentioned, you probably don’t know what the other lines said by AI and you don’t know,” Neville told New York. “We can put a documentary-ethics panel after that,” he said in an interview with GQ.”
