Comparison of Information System and Information – The key difference between information systems and information technology is that information systems incorporate the technology, people, and processes involved with information. Information technology is the design and implementation of information, or data, within the information system.

Origin: Information systems have been in existence since the pre-mechanical era in the form of books, drawings, etc. However, the origin of information technology is mostly associated with the invention of computers.

Focus: Information technology is the study, design, implementation, support, or management of computer-based information systems. It focuses on maintaining the system’s hardware, software, databases, and networks, with the end goal of communicating to users how to best utilize its functionality. On the other hand, information systems refer to the management of an entire set of information, and it includes not only the technology components involved but the people and processes as well.

Development: Information systems have undergone a great deal of evolution, i.e. From manual record-keeping to the current cloud storage system. Similarly, information technology is seeing constant changes with an evermore faster processor and constantly shrinking size of storage devices.

Career: Careers in IT typically require a degree in computer science or information science; those who graduate can find employment in cybersecurity, database or network administration, infrastructure management, business intelligence, computer programming, or software development. On the other hand, IS can also be described as an overarching umbrella term for the systems, people and processes that businesses use to create, store, manipulate, and distribute information. IS is the bridge between technology and the user.

Business Application: Businesses have been using information systems for example in the form of manual books of accounts to modern TALLY. The mode of communication has also gone under big change, for example, from a letter to the email. Information technology has helped drive efficiency across an organization with improved productivity and precision manufacturing.

Whereas information systems focus on the system making use of technology, information technology focuses on technology and how it can help in disseminating information.
