Recessive characteristics: If a cross made between two organisms having a pair of contrasting characteristics the unexpressed characteristics in the offspring of F1 are called Recessive characteristics. The terms dominant and recessive describe the inheritance patterns of certain traits.
Explanation: If a cross is performed between a homozygous tall “TT” and al homozygous dwarf “tt” pea plant only tall characteristics (T) will be expressed, dwarf characteristics will remain unexpressed. Here dwarf characteristics (t) are recessive over tall characteristics. Sexually reproducing species, including people and other animals, have two copies of each gene.
