Dscribe Uses of Alkenes

Alkenes are organic compounds that consist of carbon and hydrogen atoms with one or more carbon-carbon double bonds in their chemical structure. Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Alkene is used:

(i) For the manufacture of ethyl alcohol.

(ii) For the production of oxy-acetylene flame.

(iii) To ripen fruits by artificial method.

(iv) For the manufacture of ethylene dichloride solvent, ethylene oxide, mustard gas (poisonous substance), formaldehyde, teflon, polythene etc.

(v) Now-a-days, ethylene is used as an anesthetic instead of ether.

Propene is used:

  • Polypropylene is used in plastic industry which is a polymer of propylene.
  • For the preparation of acetone and alkyle chloride from isopropyl alcohol.
