People on the Internet are locating their iPhones in France, despite not being there, in an effort to speed up their devices. “Hack”, which has received a lot of attention on Reddit and other social media networks, claims that it prevents the slowing down of devices seen on much older iPhones. Why? Well, according to a report by GizChina, all of this has led to fines being imposed on competition observer Apple in 2020. Last year the company was fined 25 million euros ($27 million) for intentionally slowing down older devices that consumers had to crawl to install the update.
Apple confirmed in 2017 that they are slowing down older devices, noting that it is to increase the performance of lithium-ion batteries with age. “Electronic components require a minimum voltage to function properly,” the company wrote on its website, explaining that older batteries are less capable of delivering the required charge for newer systems it operates. “When operations with full power management capabilities can no longer be supported, the system will perform a shutdown to save these electronic components. Although this shutdown is intentional from the device’s point of view, it may be unexpected by the user.”
And so when users downloaded an upgrade to their older model iPhone (the company says it changed from the iPhone 8) they were downloading software that would slow down their phone, to prevent these shutdowns and other battery issues, causing some firms to have planned obsolescence.
