Chromoplast in Plants

Chromoplast in Plants

Chromoplast is an organelle containing any plant pigment other than chlorophyll. The pigments may be yellow, orange, or red. Chromoplasts are usually most numerous in the cells of flowers. They are variously colored, other than green, mostly yellow and red in colour. They are also variable in shape. Chromoplast occurred in colored part of plants. e.g. petals, colored fruit and seeds, roots of carrot etc.

Chromoplasts are found in fruits, flowers, roots, and stressed and aging leaves, and are responsible for their distinctive colors.

Function: Flowers are coloured and beautiful due to their presence. Chromoplasts are coloured plastids other than green and found in coloured parts of plants such as petals of the flower, pericarp of the fruits etc. Due to the presence of carotenoid pigments they are orange, yellow or red in color.
