Differences between Oral and Written Communication
Oral and written are the two distinct methods of communication. Prime differences between them are presented below:
Oral Communication
Definition: Communication that occurs through spoken words is known as oral communication.
Media: Major media of oral communication are face-to-face conversion, telephone, lecture etc.
Record: By nature oral communication has no record if otherwise it is recorded in cassette or disk
Suitability: Oral communication is suitable for illiterate people.
Time required: Oral communication takes less time.
Feedback: Oral communication provides immediate feedback.
Use as reference: Oral communication cannot be used as a source of future reference.
Written Communication
Definition: When information is exchanged by means of written words, it is known as written communication.
Media: The major media of written communication are letters, memos, reports, circulars, notices etc.
Record: Written communication provides document for permanent record.
Suitability: It is suitable for educated people.
Time required: Written communication requites more time than oral communication.
Feedback: Feedback in written communication is delayed.
Use as reference: Written documents can be used as a source of reference.
