A thing of beauty is a joy forever. And a flower is a symbol of beauty and purity. Its sweet smell attracts one to all. There is hardly any person who doesn’t love flowers. We all like flowers but most of the people in our country are very poor. They can hardly keep body and soul together. So they can’t buy flowers. Only a particular section of people buy flowers on various occasions. The owners of flower shops do brisk business on Victory Day, Language Martyrs’ Day, Independence Day, and Valentine’s Day as thousands of people are seen purchasing flowers on those occasions for celebration.

But this attitude is changing day by day. Affluent people and the people of moderate-income groups buy flowers on the occasion of the wedding ceremony, birthday and many other social occasions. Nowadays many flown shops are seen in the towns and cities in our country. Many people cultivate flowers and sell them. The present-day floral industry is a dynamic, global and fast-growing industry, which has achieved significant growth rates during the past few decades. Today solvent people buy flowers, Their sense of beauty is increasing. A flower has a soothing, balmy and healing effect on the human mind. Indigenous flowers like beli (jasmine), rose, marigold, rajanigandha, kamini, dahlia, and a foreign flower-like gladiolus are growing in profusion in various places in the country. They decorate their houses with flowers to enhance beauty. People present flowers on any occasion. At present flower exhibitions and fairs are also held. It is encouraging to note that flower cultivation has emerged as a prospective sector in Bangladesh in recent times.

Many people have taken it as a profession because a flower is not only a source of income. Flower cultivation holds a bright prospect in our country. The flower business is booming in various cities and many people have changed their lot during the past few years. It is becoming popular day by day. Today people don’t like to sit idle. They want to work and change their condition. So we can hope that the day is not far to come when the cultivation of the flower will turn into a profitable business. With the passage of time and development of aesthetic sense among our people, giving a gift of the flower has become a popular habit among the country’s upper and middle classes.

Moreover, it will go a long way to solve our unemployment problem and contribute much to the economy of the country. The demand for the flower is increasing significantly in the country. Scores of flower shops have sprung up in Dhaka and other cities and towns. The cultivators will be able to lead a decent life. Flower cultivation in the country can be further boosted through government patronage. The growers can be provided with loans on easy terms and conditions. If people become more conscious and introduce the art of giving presents by flowers on various occasions, programs, seminars, symposiums etc., this will go a long way to encourage the flower cultivators to cultivate flowers more and more. So, a new business may emerge in our country. The country can earn huge foreign exchange by exporting flowers to the Middle East, Europe, and many other countries. The sector is not only helping to earn substantial foreign currency but is also providing employment opportunities for a large number of people. This will better the living condition of the poor flower peddlers and flower cultivators. The government should do everything needed for boosting flower production. Besides, training programs for farmers can be arranged for cultivation of flowers in a scientific way.
