Physical Properties of Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4)
- Sulphuric acid is a colorless, viscous, heavy, liquid having a density of 1.84 g/mL at 298 K.
- Sulphuric acid freezes at 10.4°C and boils at 317°C with a slight High viscosity and high boiling point of sulphuric acid is due to extensive hydrogen bonding in it.
- Sulphuric acid dissolves in water with the evolution of heat. Since the reaction is highly exothermic, hence dilute sulphuric acid is prepared by slowly adding concentrated acid to water and not water to conc. sulphuric acid.
