A Farmer

The person who does the work of farming is known as a farmer. A farmer is a person who cultivates land and grows crops. He is a very important person in our society. Generally, he lives in a village. He cultivates his own or other’s land. He is a hard worker. His house is made of corrugated, iron sheets, or straws.

An ideal farmer lives a very simple life. In Bangladesh, the life of a farmer is not so good. He inherits a little land. He is illiterate. He earns his livelihood the sweat of his brow. He does not know how to plow his land scientifically. He works from morning till evening. He can not apply the scientific method. He has only a pair of bullocks and some handmade tools. He gets up very early in the morning and takes a little breakfast. He goes to his field with and wooden plow and a pair of bullocks. He cultivates and prepares his land with simple hand-made tools. He works very hard to prepare the land for sowing crops. Sometimes he is so busy that he cannot make time to go home for the noonday meal. He comes at noon, eats his meal, takes rest, and again goes to the field. He has both pleasures and pains in his life. Often he has not enough money to buy seeds, fertilizer, or pesticides. As a result, he cannot produce more food for himself and his family. He gets pleasures when he has a good harvest. But he gets pains when his crops are destroyed by droughts, floods or cyclones.

Though a farmer works hard, he cannot meet the basic needs of his family. Sometimes he takes a loan from the money lenders. If he cannot repay the load, he sells the piece of land. A farmer is left at the mercy of nature. He lives from hand to mouth. He also suffers from many diseases. Though he works hard, he cannot lead a decent life. He cannot raise his head from the fear of wants. His life is meant for the struggle of existence. However, a farmer can improve his condition by availing of the easy loans and by planned use of it. Sometimes, he and his family members have to starve. His children are deprived of education and the members of his family are deprived of education and the members of his family are deprived of entertainment and medical facilities. He should take advantage of scientific mechanized tools and the latest method of cultivation.

In our society, a farmer is meant to belong to the lower class. If he gets many crops, his joys know no bounds. On the other hand, if the crops are not good, his sorrows know no bounds too. But in reality, an ideal farmer is an asset to the country. He contributes a lot to the economy of the country. Therefore, the government should give subsidies in the agricultural sector so that they can lead a decent life. We can better their overall condition taking concerted steps.
