Farm Forestry

Farm forestry is a term applied to the process under which farmers grow trees for commercial and non-commercial purposes on their farmlands. It is the growing of commercial trees on farm bunds, usually in single file. It includes all thinking and all actions pertaining to formation and supervision of forests, as well as harvesting, marketing and utilization of all forest products and services.

Forest departments of various states distribute seedlings of trees free of cost to small and medium farmers. Several lands such as the margins of agricultural fields, grasslands, and pastures, the land around homes and cow sheds may be used for raising trees under non-commercial farm forestry. But such farm forestry is feasible only when electricity for flood irrigation is free and fertilizers greatly subsidized. In other words, farm forestry is indulged in generally by the well-off and regularly the nonresident farmers.
